Where do fire doors need to be installed?
Where fire doors are required will vary across different sectors, as each building has its own risks and regulations.
Domestic
In domestic properties, houses with an integral garage which leads to the house must have a fire door to provide effective protection between the garage and living spaces, as typically flammable materials and fluids are stored here, which can pose a higher risk of fire.
Homes that are over three levels must have fire doors on each room leading to a stairwell.
For flats, apartments, and Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs), fire doors are critical. Entrance doors to individual units, doors between communal areas and stairwells, as well as protecting riser cupboards and electrical.

Commercial
In commercial buildings such as offices, fire doors must be installed at key locations including escape routes, stairwells, lift lobbies, and corridors.
Partitioned office areas also require fire-rated doors to create compartments that will prevent fires from spreading to other areas.
Retail & Hospitality
Retail and hospitality environments are high-traffic, high-risk areas where the functionality of fire doors is vital to protect fire escape routes, corridors, and stockrooms where hazardous materials are often stored.
In restaurants and hotels, fire doors in kitchens and laundry areas are required due to the elevated fire risk. Guest room doors in hotels are typically required to be fire-rated to create a safe compartment in case of fire during the night when guests are sleeping.

Fire doors in educational facilities like schools, colleges and universities protect large groups of students and staff, often in complex building layouts. Fire doors are required for classroom doors opening into corridors, stairwells and in corridors, to preserve escape routes in case of fire.

They are especially critical where vulnerable individuals who may be unable to evacuate quickly are, such as in bedrooms in care homes.
Industrial
Industrial sites such as factories, warehouses, and manufacturing facilities contain a mix of hazardous materials, complex machinery, and open-plan layouts—all of which heighten the importance of fire door installations.
Fire doors are required between production areas and office spaces to protect workers and restrict fire spread, as well as fire doors protecting storage spaces that hold flammable materials.
